Public Education Grant (PEG)

In 1995, the Texas Legislature created the Public Education Grant (PEG) program (Texas Education Code [TEC], §§29.201– 29.205). The PEG program permits a parent whose child attends a campus on the PEG List to request a transfer to another campus within their home district or to a campus in a different district. A list of PEG-designated campuses is provided to districts annually. By February 1, districts must notify each parent assigned to a campus on the PEG List. Parents may then request a transfer for the following school year.

Under PEG, TEA identifies campuses at which:

  • Campuses that receive an overall scaled score below 60 in 2022 are placed on the 2023–24 PEG List.

  • Please see TEC, §§29.201–29.205 for more information.

Currently, there are not any Bryan ISD campuses identified on the PEG List.

The parent(s) or guardian(s) of a student attending a campus identified on the PEG list, has the option to request a transfer of their child to another Bryan ISD campus that is not on the PEG list or to another school district for the following school year; however, transportation to and from school will be the parent’s or guardian’s responsibility.

The chosen school is entitled to accept or reject the application for the student to attend school.   The transfer school/district may not use a criterion that discriminates on the basis of a student’s race, ethnicity, academic achievement, athletic abilities, language proficiency, sex, or socioeconomic status. If the application is accepted, the school chosen may not charge the student tuition. The home school district does not have to pay for transportation charges to and from the school.

It is important to note that student eligibility for transfer expires upon any of the following three conditions:

  • Completion of all grades on the campus upon which eligibility was originally based;

  • Removal of the campus from the PEG list;

  • Assignment of the student to a campus that is not on the PEG list as a result of redrawn attendance boundaries.

To request information about a transfer to another campus in Bryan ISD for the current school year, or for further information on transfers, please contact the Department of School Leadership at 979-209-1075.
